Come Fly With Me as we meet a variety of pigeons that are living in a coop, in The Bronx, New York on a tenement rooftop amidst the noisy neighborhood, fire house and train station. We venture out and learn about their fellow bird mates and human friends. A pigeon named Elvis adds humor and friendship as he builds his relationship with Mart, the owner/bird handler. Mart enjoys his birds and is planning on building a new addition to the coop so that the birds have more room to flap their wings. As days go by, we meet fellow pigeons, Maria, Jess, and Nicholas who bring fun and laughter into the coop. We begin to understand the lives of Lindy and Franko the disabled pigeons. Their lives can be challenging at times, but admirable. The adventures of Tony and Paolo, the tiny mice bring excitement into the coop, but there are no limits as to what they will do next. One morning tragedy strikes and uncertainty creeps into the lives of everyone. Will the pigeons stay in their coop or be transported? The pigeons are scared and their feathers are ruffled. Is this the end or the beginning of a new adventure for all ?

I read this book quite some time ago but still remember how intrigued I became with the story line and especially with the characters! Being raised in the country I had never experienced the "Bronx Life" and this gave me a history of the tight knit communities that are formed there, I believe they become life long friends, and probably still today talk about growing up in the Bronx with a tone that only one who actually grew up there would be able to interpret. I especially love the pigeons!! what a group! This book was exciting, imaginative,and captivating. This author has an incredible talent and her friendly, simple style appeals to everyone of all ages. I strongly recommend this little book to anyone and especially to those who have a small child; as you read watch as their imaginations soar!! A well written book defining the sights and sounds of city life through the eyes of the Bronx famous bird, the pigeon. Pigeon raising and racing are part of the Bronx culture. Those of us who were fortunate to have grown up in that era will enjoy the trip back through this author who graciously guides us through the life and times of a family of pigeons who have to adjust to new handlers due to the illness of the original bird handler. A story true to its meaning of life and the changes one has to endure to move forward. Well done !!
Phyllis is a friend of mine and one of the most resourceful persons that I know, and I love her. Her heart is of gold and her imagination is vivid and clear. I received the book this week and read it from cover to cover in one sitting. What I loved about the book is how the story line develops emphasizing positive relationships and love, and the support, caring and acceptance among the colorful characters and their diverse personalities. I love the sense of adventure and the ability of the characters to embrace change in a positive way. Most of all I loved the gratitude! No one knows better than Phyllis and Vinny the challenges and sorrows of life, yet they always are able to focus on the positive and be grateful for all that is good and positive in their lives. This is a great lesson for all children to learn. Always to be grateful for the many blessings that each of us do have. Well done my dear friend. I am looking forward to your next book!
Come Fly with Me, is one of the most delightful childrens books I have had the pleasure of reading. So much so, I purchased 10 copies to gift some family members and Physical and Occupational Therapist I work with evaluating and furnishing adult and pediatric clients for custom wheelchairs.
This book was particular enjoyable for me, as I was born in the South Bronx, and my family has always kept, bred, shown and/or raced pigeons. As a boy from my roof top, I could see five other pigeon lofts on surrounding apartment buildings roofs. It was always fun hanging out on the roof and listening to the adults talk about their birds.
From the nicely done illustrations in, Come Fly with Me, I can almost identify the different types of pigeons on the pages. The story told through the eyes and perspective of a pigeon named “Elvis” touches on everyday situations, such as, immunization shots, living conditions, interacting with others, disability, lost, and relocating.
Ms. Tullino has done an incredible job writing this children’s book. I loved the story line and thoroughly enjoyed reliving the childhood memories that came flooding back as I read. I look forward to reading more of her books and sharing the memories of growing up in Da Bronx.
