Saint Agnes was martyred in January of A.D. 304 under the persecution of Emperor Diocletian. She was twelve years old and a virgin. Her refusal to marry the son of a prefect set off a chain reaction throughout Roman society that caused them to rethink the persecution of Christians and paved the way for Christianity to become the official religion of the Roman Empire under Emperor Constantine.

The short novel, Agnes of Rome, by Catherine Brigden, is an artful illustration of upper middle class Roman life at the end of the Third Century. It shows the struggles of the early Christians to establish their identity as Followers of Christ and as patriotic citizens of Rome. However, Saint Agnes’ personal struggle, as told in this story, seems almost too easy to overcome. I am sure that she and her family must have had deep and conflict filled discussions about her decision to become a Bride of Christ and to accept her vocation to Martyrdom. Many Christians forget that “the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church.” -- TertullianProduct details

Agnes of Rome edition by Catherine Brigden Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Agnes of Rome is a delightfully creative historical fiction. I found it to be accurate in terms of its understanding of the culture of Rome, and the life of Agnes. It would make an excellent dramatic reading for a history or church group. It could easily be adapted into a short play or skit if one wishes to use more staging. I would recommend it to any church with an interest in the dramatic arts.
This book is about Agnes of Rome a first century Christian martyr. Her life in early Rome as a young Christian captivated me from beginning to end. From secret church services in the catacombs to avoid Roman persecution, to the way the young woman of Rome knew their obligation to the state, it made you empathize with Agnes at every level. The story told in early Rome could just as well be played out today in Egypt, iran, NKorea, or any place were religious persecution exists today. If you want to be inspired by a Christian that went on before you, this is the book.
Very helpful.
This is a great read that combines history of the Roman Empire and the history of The Christian church. Saint Agnes is a true inspiration for her devotion to the Lord Jesús Christ!
I got this book for Christmas. I am twelve years old and I was planning to choose St. Agnes an my conformation saint. This book is such a page turner, I read it in half a day! I was one of my favorite gifts this year. The story is beautifully written and so bittersweet. Catherine Brigden really is a great writer.
